Procedure:
Seven homes
with active carpenter ant infestations were selected for the study. Initial
carpenter ant counts were made at each location prior to treatment. No
attempt was made to locate or directly treat satellite nests in the structures.
Five homes were treated with NIBAN
Granular Bait and NIBAN-FG Fine Granular Bait between early June and early
September, 1995. No other treatments or control methods were used and
two home remained untreated to serve as controls.
Homes in the test had an average of
1820 square feet of floor space and 181 linear feet of exterior perimeter.
Approximately four ounces of NIBAN-FG Fine Granular Bait was applied to
each home in a single application into wall voids on each level, but only
through readily available accessible points such as around plumbing pipes
and electrical outlets. An average of thirty ounces of NIBAN Granular
Bait was applied in each of three separate applications to a three foot
band around the entire perimeter of the structures as well as around the
base of adjacent trees. Applications were performed over an eight week
period from June through August, 1995.

Discussion:
In
the five structures treated with NIBAN Granular Bait and NIBAN-FG
Fine Granular Bait, carpenter ants were not observed either inside or
outside the structure by the beginning of September, 1995. In comparing
ant activity at the treated houses verses the control sites, there was
a definite decline and possible elimination of the carpenter ants. However,
because of the natural decline of carpenter ants in the fall, treated
houses were monitored through the spring of 1996 to determine the actual
level of control. In March, 1996 all of the owners of the treated structures
reported that the numbers of ants seen during the spring were trivial
compared to the numbers observed in 1995.
