Rot is a fungal organism that is using the wood as a food source. It needs lots of moisture to get started.

When wood rots, it loses both strength and density. It can appear dark brown, white, orange or cream color. In all cases, it is much softer and can usually be detected with a knife blade or drill. Also it cracks across the grain easily and often has cubical cracks showing up. That’s when most people discover it, and then they use a patch or wood filler to “repair” it.

The repair holds for a while, but the fungus is still eating the wood and now its hidden below the patch. Many patching materials actually conduct water giving the fungus a happy place to take off.

The wood continues to decompose around the patch, and pretty soon the patch has nothing to bond to except composted, wet and rotten wood.

Then the patch falls out.

The RIGHT WAY to repair rot is to start by removing the decay, then treating the wood with Bor8 Rods and Board Defense. The Board Defense kills the fungal organisms and leaves behind a residual layer or borates in the cavity.

The Bor8 Rods provide a long term slow release of the borate preservative so if the wood gets wet enough to rot again, the borates will prevent rot from ever starting.
